When the daily grind is getting you down, there’s nothing like a girls’ getaway to help you recharge. What’s better than sharing belly laughs—and maybe a few glasses of wine—with good girlfriends? There’s something special about women traveling together: It’s a chance to connect over aspects of life it sometimes feels like no one else understands.
With that in mind, a Mesquite vacation is one of the best ways to escape humdrum routines without breaking the bank. Its location just 15 minutes east of downtown Dallas offers easy access to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, so it’s convenient without the big city price tag—savings you can apply directly to a spa splurge or fancy meal. It’s also a safe, friendly town with plenty of Texas charm.
Ready to gather the girls for a relaxing weekend away? Here’s how to make it happen in Mesquite.
What to Do
Whether you’re looking to be super active during your weekend getaway or you’d rather lean into relaxing, Mesquite is the perfect launching point for your adventure.
Start each morning with a brisk walk on the Butterfly Trail, an arm of Mesquite’s lovely, well-kept greenbelt system. Or, for a bigger outing, take a hike on the gorgeous Piedmont Ridge Trail, where you’ll get great views of Dallas—wildflowers here make a grand entrance in the spring, and nearby Scyene Overlook is one of the best places to see fall foliage. If the weather’s not cooperating, head to Uptown Yoga, where you and your crew can drop in on an invigorating class in a supportive, non-competitive atmosphere.
Once you’ve worked up a sweat, you’ve earned a chance to chill. Head into Dallas proper for a visit to Vivian’s Boutique Spa, where you and the gals can indulge in a peaches-and-lemon-creme sweet tea mani/pedi, a guac and goji berry facial, or a deliciously relaxing Swedish massage.
Of course, no weekend getaway would be complete without a little retail therapy. Mesquite is known as a retail hub, and with good reason: more than 18 million shoppers flock to the Town East Mall and Market East every year. (You might want to take care of this errand early in your trip, so you can sport a new pair of cowgirl boots from Cavender’s Boot City throughout your trip.) For an exculsive shopping experience, treat yourself to an afternoon of shopping for the finer things in life a the In the Ivy Boutique in Downtown Mesquite.
If you’re making it an early night, finish off the evening with a paint-and-sip class at Mesquite’s Painting with a Twist studio, where you’ll each get to create your own works of art. Or you can head to the Mesquite Arts Center and see what they have on their schedule for plays, the symphony, or gallery receptions.
Where to Eat and Drink
One of the best parts of a getaway with your gal pals is that no one has to cook—it’s time to kick back and let someone else do the work. Affordable lodging in Mesquite means you can splurge a bit when it comes to your food budget. Bonus: Mesquite is home to more than 150 restaurants, so you can make everyone’s dietary preferences work.
No visit to Mesquite (or any town in Texas, for that matter) is the real deal unless you’ve eaten Tex-Mex at least once. Fortunately, Mesquite has you covered in that arena: Martinez has been serving up the best Tex-Mex in North Texas for more than 30 years, and it’s beloved by locals and out-of-towners alike. Naturally, you’ll want to walk or use a ride-share service for this one, since a Tex-Mex meal practically requires a margarita accompaniment—or several. You can also head over to Tastebud Temptations where they cook up traditional southern dishes with a touch of creativity. They “serve comfort food in a happy place” and who could ask for more than that when you are hanging out with a bunch of girlfriends?
For something a little farther from home, check out Dallas’ Shinsei, the city’s preeminent purveyor of pan-Asian cuisine. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is sophisticated, but those aren’t the only reasons to have lunch or dinner here: It’s also owned and operated by women.
Wine aficionados will jump at the chance to try wines at Times Ten Cellars, which serves unique, approachable Texas wines paired with small plates from around the world. Regular live jazz makes for an inviting space to enjoy your vino on-site, or you can pick up a few bottles to bring back and enjoy with a clay mask at home.
Where to Stay
The whole point of traveling with girlfriends is to spend time together, so you don’t want to hole up in separate hotel rooms. That’s no problem in Mesquite, where a variety of hotels offer suite options so your whole group can share a room—that means more time for watching movies, sipping wine, and catching up until the wee hours.
The Hampton Inn & Suites is an especially convenient option, as it’s located right next to the Mesquite Arena and is walking distance from the arts center and community theater. There’s also a fitness center in case some group members have regimens they’d like to keep up with. The nearby Courtyard by Marriott is another ideal option for groups, and its Starbucks coffee and signature cocktails mean you’ll have no trouble filling any downtime. Rooms are also equipped with 32-inch flat-screen TVs, so you can gather around for all your favorite flicks.
