Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Mesquite

Mesquite, Texas, just 15 minutes east of Downtown Dallas, is ideally situated smack dab in the middle of the sunbelt of the United States. It gets, on average, 233 sunny days a year, far above the national average. That means that visitors have a pretty great chance of having stellar weather on a trip here.

But on the off chance that there is rain in the forecast, it’s best to be prepared with a plan B, especially if there are kids in tow. Good thing there is a wealth of indoor options to do, see, and experience in Mesquite. Things that every member of the family can take part in and enjoy.

Here is a list of the best that the area has to offer when the sky is gray, and the raincoats come out. In fact, they’re so much fun that they needn’t be on a rainy-day list at all—they are just as enjoyable underneath a bright Texas sun.

If You’re Feeling Antsy

Escape rooms are all the rage. At Xcape DFW Adventures, participants are “locked” into a room decorated and designed to tell a story and create an immersive experience. Can you find the treasure before a band of blood-thirsty pirates return? Or after having infiltrated the hideout of a known spy trying to steal a secret weapon, can you stop him before your cover is blown? Solve the riddles, reprogram hidden bugs, crack the codes, find the keys, uncover the secret passages, and, hopefully, find a way out. It’s super fun.

If You’re Up for a Movie

A movie is a great choice in any weather. And how about enjoying the show in one of the largest movie theaters in the world? That’s right, the AMC Dine-In Mesquite 30 has, wait for it, 30 screens. That means there is something for everyone. Have some pre-film cocktails at MacGuffins, a bar inspired by classic movies and TV shows. Then have dinner while watching the latest blockbuster (or indy, art-house film, or rom-com, we’re not here to judge). Choose from a full-serve restaurant to delivery at your seat—it’s all about choice here.

If You’re Feeling Artsy

Tap into the left side of your brain and take in a little culture while here. Painting with a Twist does painting classes for all ages 7 and up. After some instructions, you’ll wind up painting a unique work of art, and the adult classes get fun because it’s BYOB. The Mesquite Art Center hosts a “Just For Kids” program that is incredibly popular. Kids can make their own silkscreens and T-shirt design, paint on canvas, take dance classes, or even see a show. But it’s not just the kids that enjoy this place—there’s a wide variety of shows, exhibits, concerts, and events as well. There’s always something going on.

The Corner Theatre is a community gathering place that brings people together for art, plays, music, dancing—anything, really. You can also see what’s happening at the Mesquite Convention Center and Exhibit Hall, which hosts several consumer expos, including the Texas Fly Fishing & Brew Festival each year.

If You’re Ready to Shop ‘Til You Drop

There’s nothing like a little retail therapy to chase the blues away. Mesquite’s welcoming downtown has a variety of fun, interesting boutiques that make for a great afternoon. The Town East Mall features more than 200 shops, and you’re sure to find something there. The crown jewel for antique hunters is the Antique Gallery of Mesquite. This is a haven for vintage lovers, with over 170 vendors across 36,000 square feet selling one-of-a-kind items. Anyone who likes to find something unique will love this place. And everyone in Texas should have a good pair of cowboy boots. You have a pair, don’t you? Better not risk it, head to the Boot Barn or Cavender’s Boot City to find your perfect match.

If the Kids Need Some Excitement

Getting the kids outside and away from phones and game systems is challenging enough when the weather is perfect—forget about it in the rain. Fortunately, Mesquite has parents covered. Kids Empire is the kind of place that makes parents jealous: “Where was this when we were kids?” they say. In this massive indoor playground, kids of all ages can bounce, climb, slide, drive, play, and tire themselves out much to the adult’s delight. There’s even a toddler’s area that your little ones can have all to themselves.

At Urban Air, there are trampolines everywhere—the floor, the walls, everywhere but the ceiling. If that doesn't sound like fun, they also sport an obstacle course, climbing walls, dodgeball, bumper cars, battle beams over a foam pit, a ropes course, a warrior course, and other attractions. Kids are so lucky these days. Aim High is another facility that features bounce houses, climbing structures and arcade games. Celebration Station is another fun-filled way to spend a day. This adventure center features laser tag and arcade games inside if it’s raining. When it clears up, you can enjoy the batting cages, bumper boats, go-karts, mini-golf, and an epic paintball course outside.

Just because the sun might not be out, this list shows that the fun and adventure doesn’t have to end. Besides, you know what they say about the weather in Texas: wait five minutes, and it’ll be over. Armed with this list, any visitor can have days of fun, rain or shine.
